FAMILY COUNSELING

Family counseling

Are you tired of feeling helpless as addiction destroys someone you love? Do you want to gain more insight into addiction and the different ways you can deal with it? And do you want to help your loved one not only recognize their addiction, but also do something about  it? Then you’ve come to the right place. Family counseling helps you and your loved ones regain control of your lives and build a healthier future.

The consequences of addiction

Loved ones of addicts often become exhausted and desperate from all the things they have tried, usually in vain, to help their loved one. As an expert by experience, I know how difficult it is for an addict to acknowledge the extent of the problem. Through family counseling, I will teach you more about addiction and offer you tools to deal with the consequences of this disease. This involves questions such as:

  • How do you deal with a loved one who is actively addicted?
  • How do you deal with a loved one in recovery?
  • How do you deal with a loved one who relapses?
  • How do you restore the connection with yourself and your loved one(s)?

My approach

A family counseling program consists of an average of 6 to 8 sessions. During these sessions, all aspects of addiction are explained in detail. This gives those involved more knowledge about this disease, clarifies why addiction is called a family disease, and creates more understanding for the addicted loved one.

After the first sessions, in which we form a picture of the addict through their loved ones, an intervention meeting takes place with the addict present. In this meeting, we try to open their eyes and encourage the addict to acknowledge his/her addiction. If necessary, a second or third intervention meeting may follow.

During the subsequent sessions, the focus is on possible next steps. We discuss ways of dealing with the consequences of the addiction, explore treatment options if the addict is willing, and create awareness to reveal the development of own patterns, behavior, and unhealthy coping mechanisms.

The goal of family counseling is to free loved ones from the paralyzing grip that the addict has on them. We therefore discuss how you, as a loved one, can regain your strength, explore your boundaries, and see how you can ensure that you no longer cross those boundaries. In addition, we explore the pain, sadness, and resentment caused by the addiction of a loved one.

Working together on recovery

A successful counseling process requires complete honesty, openness, and willingness. To ensure this, I guarantee absolute discretion during treatment. I create a safe, confidential, and non-judgmental environment for addicts and their loved ones, where we work together on insight and recovery.
